  9.  AB    AIM: To assess the prevalence of transmitted zidovudine-resistant HIV in
  10.        individuals who seroconverted after 1990. METHODS: HIV was isolated from
  11.        10 homosexual men with symptomatic primary HIV infection, and from their
  12.        sexual partners when possible. Isolates obtained within the first two
  13.        months following onset of symptoms were assessed for ZDV sensitivity
  14.        with a PBL assay. HIV RT from one donor-recipient pair was sequenced.
  15.        RESULTS: Isolates obtained within a mean of 16.5 (r8-32) days of onset
  16.        of symptoms demonstrated a mean ZDV IC50 of 0.008 (r0.001-0.041); IC50
  17.        of isolates from 3 sexual partners ranged from 0.001 to 0.08. Sequence
  18.        analysis of the HIV RT of one donor-recipient pair with IC50 values of
  19.        0.08 and 0.01 respectively showed a mutation at position 70 (Lys-Arg) in
  20.        the donor RT; the RT of his sexual partner showed a wild-type sequence.
  21.        CONCLUSION: HIV with reduced sensitivity to ZDV was isolated from a
  22.        homosexual man, but not from his seroconverting sexual partner.
  23.        Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of additional PHI isolates and
  24.        donor-recipient pairs will be presented.
